NORTHERN METROPOLITAN ZONE INFORMATION 2009

Zone championships - final results
Final Results from the Northern Metropolitan Zone Carnival that was held on 12/13 December 2009 at Barton Park are now available. You can download the complete list of results by age group, or the Hornsby results by age group. Congratulations to those athletes who qualified for the Region 1 Championships that will be held on 27-28 February 2010 at Narrabeen Sporting Complex.

What is the Zone Carnival?
This carnival is the major event of the season for the Northern Metropolitan Zone where all 6 Centres (Cherrybrook, Hornsby, North Rocks/Carlingford, Northern Suburbs, Parramatta and Ryde) are involved.
Zone is a competition for athletes in the U7 to U17 age groups who have been chosen at Centre level to attend. It is a great opportunity for athletes to represent their Centre.
In the U7-U12 age groups, only 4 athletes per Centre can enter an event and each athlete can enter a maximum of 4 events.
In the U13-U17 age groups there is no limit to the number of entrants in a particular event and each athlete can enter a maximum of 6 events.
The first 4 finalists from Under 8s up qualify for the Region Carnival held in February. The first 3 finalists in the Under 7s receive a medal. Top 8 in all events receive a Certificate.
No late entries or substitutions are permitted on the day. Final entries for the Carnival close 3 weeks prior.

When (and where) is it?
Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th December 2009 will be held at Barton Park, North Parramatta. Download the layout of Barton Park (139kB pdf).

What events is my athlete entered in?
You can download the Northern Metropolitan Zone Program

What are parents' duties at Zone?
A requirement of Northern Metropolitan Centres is that parents of competing athletes must make themselves available for at least one allocated duty timeslot on the day their child competes. A list of duty timeslots, allocated to HDLAC can be located on the 'microphone table' for the next two weeks at our oval. Please take time to peruse this list and select a suitable timeslot.
All allocated duties must be filled by the end of competition Saturday 5th December 2009. Parents who have not selected a duty by this date will be allocated one by HDLAC.
You can now download the list of Parent Duties.

What are the Zone uniform requirements?
It goes without saying that all athletes will be attired in their HDLAC uniform with athlete number and age patch attached correctly.
Athletes also require a Centre number 4 attached to the back of their uniform. Refer to the Uniform page of our Website.

How does the Track and Field program work?
A list of events is published prior to the carnival. It is not the order of events, but a list to identify the events.
Some events on the program have a time next to them. This is to indicate the event will not take place prior to this time. It is not the time the event will take place.
Two tracks (circular and straight) are run at the same time. This makes the track program run very fast. At times it may appear nothing is being done to conduct track events but this is not the case. It is to allow Field events a chance to catch up and also provide some recovery time for the athletes before further track events are called.
If 2 events for the same age group are called at the same time, DON'T PANIC. There is a Clash Manager who ensures any athletes entered in the 2 events will have the opportunity to compete in both.
All events are announced twice over the PA system prior to being conducted so make sure you listen closely to the PA.

Is there anything else about the Zone Carnival we should be aware of?
There will be waiting time between events so please be patient. There are around 1200 athletes competing in 300 track and field events.
Cameras and mobile telephones are not permitted to be used inside the competition area. If there is an official photographer at the Carnival, they will be clearly identifiable.
If you are assisting inside the competition area, you are not allowed to call out to the athletes.
All the Officials are parents volunteering their time to help run the Carnival. If you feel that something is not right about the way competition has been conducted, please address these concerns to your Team Manager only who will make enquiries on your behalf. Do not approach Officials directly as this can distract them from their duties
The Carnival commences at 8:30am on Saturday and Sunday but marshalling for the first track events is at 8:15am (so, really, you need to be there before 8:00am if you're in these events.
Make sure you allow plenty of time prior to your call times as parking can be a problem and you may need to park some distance away and walk with all your gear.
HDLAC will provide some shade so bring chairs and rugs to sit on. If you have your own shade, it is advisable to bring it with you as often there is not enough.
Make sure you put sun block on your athlete before leaving home if you have an early event as it is easy to forget once you get there.

What are the Zone 'Must Haves'?
Sun block.
Hat.
Portable folding chairs (for parents and athletes).
Over-shirt for athlete and a jacket in case the weather turns feral. Throw in an umbrella as well.
Athlete H2O (water) bottle
Extra cold H2O / cold drinks to prevent dehydration - it can be very hot.
Food suitable for athletes. (Usual canteen food and sausage sizzles are probably OK for spectators but generally not suitable for competing athletes.)

How do I get to Barton Park?
From Pennant Hills Road via Bettington Road or Gollan Avenue to Belmore Street. Follow Belmore Street under James Ruse Drive and turn first left into Gladstone Street. Barton Park is on the left - park where ever you can.
