NORTH EAST METROPOLITAN ZONE INFORMATION 2013

What is the Zone Carnival?       You can download this page as a pdf [137kB] suitable for printing . . .
This carnival is the major event of the season for the North East Metropolitan Zone where all 5 Centres (Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Manly, Mosman and Northern Districts) are involved.
Zone is a competition for athletes in the U7 to U17 age groups who have been chosen at Centre level to attend. It is a great opportunity for athletes to represent their Centre.
In the U7-U12 age groups, only 4 athletes per Centre can enter an event and each athlete can enter a maximum of 4 events, plus the 4x100m relay (if chosen).
In the U13-U17 age groups there is no limit to the number of entrants in a particular event and each athlete can enter a maximum of 6 events, plus the 4x100m relay (if chosen).
Late entries and substitutions are permitted on the day, up to 45 minutes before the 'not before' time printed on the program. This concession applies only to athletes who have entered Zone by the closing date, Monday 17 December 2012.
You can download the list by name of Hornsby athletes that will appear in the printed program. You can also download the list by age group, which will be easier to check.

When (and where) is it?
Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd February 2013 will be held at the Academy of Sport, Wakehurst Parkway, Narrabeen.
Events commence at 8:30am both days. First Call 8.10am
On arrival, all competitors are asked to report to Peter Brown (Championships Officer) to have their name marked off. Peter will have a table set up under the Hornsby tent. Athletes should then remain in the vicinity of the Hornsby tents with their age groups.

Program
You can download the order of events and the 'not-before times' here. A full official program listing all competitors, lane draws, not before times for events, rules, etc can be purchased for $4 at the entry gate to the venue.
You can download the Hornsby relay teams that have been selected to compete.

Ground entry fee
Entry fee $3, payable at the gate. Entry for competitors and officials is free.

Zone merchandise for sale
North East Metropolitan Zone polo shirt - $25
North East Metropolitan Zone socks - $5 each or 3 for $10

Entry Rules
U7 - U12 – Maximum number of events allowed per athlete – 4 individual events
U7 – U12 – Maximum number of athletes per event for each centre - 4
U13 – U17 – Maximum number of events allowed per athlete – 6 individual events
U13 – U17 – there is no maximum number per event

Selection Criteria - U7-U12 age groups
It is important to ensure we get the right balance between maximizing participation giving as many interested athletes as possible a go and providing the opportunity for the best performed athletes per event to compete. The four best performed athletes per event are given the option to choose that event.

Awards and progression
Under 7 competitors will receive medals if they are placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a final. All finalists receive a certificate showing their performance. Under 7 competitors do not progress to Regional and State Championships.
For Under 8 – Under 17 competitors the first 6 place getters in a final at NEMZ plus the next best 4 competitors from the finals in that event across NEMZ and NMZ will progress to Region. This is being applied other than for short distance events in lanes that will advance 8 finalists from each Zone. Results from all finals will be posted on the results board at the venue.
Due to the new progression system from Zone to Region a competitor must have competed in a final at Zone to be considered for qualification to Region. All competitors who are aware that they will be unavailable to contest an event at Region are asked to withdraw from contesting the final of that event at Zone (by notifying our Team Manager/Championships Officer, Peter Brown) so as not to impede the possible progression of another competitor and cause a vacancy in the event at Region.
The list of Regional qualifiers will be available on our website on Tuesday, 6 February.

Pre-allocation of parents' duties
As with all Little Athletics carnivals a parent or guardian from each family with a child competing is required to be rostered for at least one duty period over the two days of competition. There are a variety of duties with shifts approximately two hours long, starting at 8am on each day. Please see your Parent Help Co-ordinator, Peter Brown, to choose a duty and timeslot. Note that the most popular times fill very quickly. If you have not selected a time you will be allocated both a task and a timeslot.
All allocated duties must be filled by the end of competition Saturday 26th January 2013. Parents who have not selected a duty by this date will be allocated one by the Parent Help Co-ordinator, Peter Brown.
You can download the list of allocated Hornsby Parent Duties as of 31 January. Note that there are still a number of duty periods yet to be allocated and volunteers would be most welcome.
All parent / helpers must wear enclosed shoes. No thongs or open sandals permitted.
You can contact Peter Brown on 0416-008-537 or by e-mail to peter.m.brown@au.harveynorman.com.

What do parents do when they arrive at the venue
At the Carnival, all parent helpers will be required to inform Peter Brown of their arrival at the venue. Peter will then direct parents to the North East Metropolitan Zone Parent Roster Sign-on table. Parent helpers should sign on at this table approximately 15 mins before their rostered time.

What are the Zone uniform requirements?
All athletes are required to wear the correct HDLAC uniform with their registration number, red IGA patch, age patch and Centre #4 attached correctly. Refer to the photographs on the Championships page.
You can download the LANSW brochure, 'Placement of numbers and patches for all Little Athletics NSW carnivals'.

Footwear
Shoes are compulsory for all competitors in all events. Spikes may be worn as follows:
Under 7 and Under 8: cross-trainer or rubber spiked shoes (waffles). Shoes with metal spikes not permitted.
Under 9 – Under 12: spikes may be worn in all track events run entirely in lanes and in all jumps events.
Under 13 – Under 17: spikes may be worn in all track events (except Walks), all jumps events, and in javelin.
All competitors: spikes with the spikes removed or blanks inserted may not be worn in any events.

Spiked shoes - U9 to U17
Tartan spikes (7mm Christmas tree) only are to be used.

You can use your own equipment
It is permissible to bring your own equipment to use at the Zone Championships, including your own throwing equipment, starting blocks, etc.
A condition of bringing/using your own implements is that you must leave the equipment at the event for the entire day and agree to its use by other athletes.
The Hornsby Committee does not recommend that athletes bring and use their own equipment.

Competition Numbers / Patches - all competitors must have:
The correct individual McDonald’s registration number firmly attached to the front of their top with the red border visible.
Correct Age Patch firmly attached to the front left hand side of their top or shorts.
Centre number (without Coca-Cola logo) firmly attached to the back of their top or shorts.
IGA patch firmly attached to the right hand chest of their top.
Refer to the photographs on the Championships page; you can also download the LANSW brochure, 'Placement of numbers and patches for all Little Athletics NSW carnivals'.

How does the Track and Field program work?
All events are announced twice over the PA system prior to being conducted.
When you hear your event called, you should proceed directly to either the track or field marshalling areas.
Competitors in the first field events each morning should proceed directly to the event to be marshalled.
If 2 events for the same age group are called at the same time, DON'T PANIC. A Clash Manager will ensure that any athlete entered in the 2 events will have the opportunity to compete in both.

Is there anything else about the Zone Carnival we should be aware of?
There will be waiting time between events so please be patient. There will be many athletes competing in 300 track and field events.
Cameras and mobile telephones are not permitted to be used inside the competition area. If there is an official photographer at the Carnival, they will be clearly identifiable.
If you are assisting inside the competition area, you are not allowed to call out to the athletes.
All the Officials are parents volunteering their time to help run the Carnival. If you feel that something is not right about the way competition has been conducted, please address these concerns to our Team Manager / Championships Officer, Peter Brown, who will make enquiries on your behalf. Do not approach Officials directly.
The Carnival commences at 8:30am on Saturday and Sunday but marshalling for the first track events is at 8:15am so it is recommended that you arrive by 7:45am for these events.
Make sure you allow plenty of time prior to your not-before times as parking can be a problem and you may need to park some distance away and walk with all your gear.
HDLAC will provide shade shelters so bring chairs and rugs to sit on.
